A Listening Walk

Explain to your children that they are going on a “listening walk” outside. You can either wait until you return home or to the classroom for them to tell you what they hear or you can have them tell you right when they hear it. The latter may be a better option for young children.
You may want to bring a tape recorder with you on the walk and then when you return from the walk you can play the sounds and have the children tell you what the sounds are as you play them.

I prefer the pure memory rather than the tape recorder. It encourages kids to notice and focus while they’re out in the field. It can be a very thoughtful experience.
