For some babies sitting independently comes naturally, for others it takes a lot of practice. No matter which category your baby falls into, these exercises can help strengthen your baby’s back and neck muscles to encourage independent sitting.

  • Tummy time is the first step to helping your baby strengthen her neck muscles. By 4 months old she will probably be able to lift her head and chest up to look around. If she is unable to do this at 6 months old you may want to discuss this with your doctor.
  • Bumbo chairs and Boppy pillows help your baby learn to sit up by providing enough support that they can sit up without toppling over.
  • Hold his little hands while he sits on his bottom with his legs in v shape. This could be a good way to help an older sibling feel important by helping the baby learn to sit.

    1. Walking – Most children learn to walk between 9 months to 18 months.
    2. Running – Usually a few months after learning how to walk.
    3. Jumping – Most children are able to jump by 2 and half years old.
    4. Balancing on one foot – Typically between 3 and half to 4 years old.
    5. Hopping on one foot -  Around 4 years old.
    6. Skipping – Usually between 4 to 6 years old.

    The words are grouped into different levels, not necessarily the corresponding grade. If you have a 3 year old or 4 year old that is ready to read go ahead and help her memorize the words and once the Pre-primer list is mastered go onto the Primer list and so on.  Memorizing this list as well as phonetic activities will help your child become a fluent reader.

    • Put a bell or some other noise maker into a container and cover that container plus two other containers with contact paper. These can be empty small milk cartons, margarine containers, baby food jars etc…
    • Shake the empty containers and then the container that has the noise maker. Look surprised and clap.
    • Have your baby shake the containers to find the one that makes noise. Act excited when he shakes the one that makes noise – your baby will love that!
    • For toddlers ask them to point to the container that makes noise.
