Turkey Feathers Counting Game

We played this game yesterday with my two year old and three year old and two of their friends. The kids really enjoyed this game, even though most of them can count to four the game was helpful with putting the number of feathers that the numeral on the turkey represented. If you want to go up to higher numbers just make your turkeys a bigger size.

Tape the turkeys to your wall and have the children add the feathers! I found it easier to tape the feathers around the wall and having the children place them on the turkeys rather than having then having to put tape on the feathers after the children have picked which feathers they wanted to add.

School Zone’s Same Or Different Workbook – A Great Book To Re-Use

While at Walgreens yesterday I bought the School Zone Same or Different workbook for 75 cents!

The book tells children to circle the picture that is the same or different but instead I ask my 3 year old to tell me which picture is the same or which one is different.

There is no writing or drawing required for any of the activities so it is a great book to reuse. The illustrations are fun and colourful and there are varying degrees of difficulties from pictures that are obviously different, to ones that are slightly different. There are also activities that involve words and groups of letters that are different from others in the group so this book is a wonderful reading readiness tool.

My 3 year old loves this book, especially the words section (she LOVES letters!) and the great thing about re-using the book is that if she doesn’t get it right the first time we can use it over and over until she understands all the concepts.

Book Review: How Do I Love You? By Leslie Kimmelman

How Do I Love You? Written by Leslie Kimmelman and Illustrated by Lisa McCue is one of the sweetest books I have read to my children. The poetry will soften a parents heart (might even make you cry!) Children will love the colourful pictures and learning to count and recognize their numbers from 1 – 20.

A wonderful book to share with your child over and over again and talk about activities that you enjoy together. Again, this is also a great book to help your child understand that there are bigger than 10!

What’s Missing?

First of all you need several different objects. Start off with three objects and as the game becomes too easy for your preschooler keep increasing the number of items.

When you have all of the objects placed infront of your child tell him what the objects name is and encourage him to name the object as well. Talking with your child about the colours, size and shape of the objects will extend their analytical skills.

Now ask your child to cover his eyes and take away one of the objects or cover it with a cloth. When your child uncovers his eyes ask him what the missing item is. If he is not sure, remind him about all the objects you both looked at earlier. If he is still not sure show him the object (make it funny!). If he wants to play again, repeat the activity!

This game will help your child develop memory and reasoning skills. Also a great game to play while waiting for dinner at a restaurant! After your child gets the hang of how to play the game let him have you guess what the missing item is!
