Ready. Set. Rhyme

Some children are kinetic learners, they learn best while moving. Here is a fun rhyming game especially for those children.

If you don’t have an indoor area big enough for all participating children to run, this activity will need to be done outdoors.

Mark a line with masking tape, chalk or any other suitable way.
Mark a designated area several feet away for the children to stop at.
Have the children stand along the line.
Call out 2, 3 or more words at a time (depending on skill level of children). If all the words that you call out rhyme the children run, if they don’t the children stay still.

It is up to you whether or not you want this game to be competitive.

Crayon’s, Paper, Scissors

If there are any 3 objects that will give my child entertainment, an opportunity to use their fine motor skills and learn other valuable skills it would crayon’s, paper and scissors.

They become so excited when they notice that they have cut a shape out and they like to build objects like houses with those shapes. My 3 year old also enjoys printing letters and cutting those out.

I will draw shapes on paper for them to cut, however they are not quite able to follow the shape with scissors yet. Still, it is great for them to practice following the shapes and fun as well!

Line Challenges

Use tape or chalk to make a line on the floor or ground outside using coloured tape or chalk. Encourage children to see how many things they can do: jump over the line, hop along the line, slide on the line etc…

After you suggest some things the children can do, they will probably come up with some of their own creative ideas.

This is a great way to encourage gross motor movements and balancing.

Jack Frost

Teaching your children poems is a great literary activity. Jack Frost is a fun winter poem that would be great for young children to draw pictures to go along with the poem. Make it into a booklet for them!

Jack Frost

The door was shut, as doors should be,
Before you went to bed last night;
Yet Jack Frost has got in, you see,
And left your window silver white.

He must have waited till you slept;
And not a single word he spoke,
But pencilled o’er the panes and crept
Away again before you woke.

And now you cannot see the hills
Nor fields that stretch beyond the lane;
But there are fairer things than these
His fingers traced on every pane.

Rocks and castles towering high;
Hills and dales, and streams and fields;
And knights in armor riding by,
With nodding plumes and shining shields.

And here are little boats, and there
Big ships with sails spread to the breeze;
And yonder, palm trees waving fair
On islands set in silver seas,

And butterflies with gauzy wings;
And herds of cows and flocks of sheep;
And fruit and flowers and all the things
You see when you are sound asleep.

For, creeping softly underneath
The door when all the lights are out,
Jack Frost takes every breath you breathe,
And knows the things you think about.

He paints them on the window-pane
In fairy lines with frozen steam;
And when you wake you see again
The lovely things you saw in dream.
