Following some basic safety measures will allow you and your children to enjoy sparklers and avoid burns.

  • Children must be carefully supervised by adults.
  • Make sure your child is not wearing any jewelry. Sparklers can even cause some gold jewelry melt against skin.
  • Have child hold the sparkler at an arms length away from their body.
  • Never hand a lighted sparkler to a child. Give them the unlit sparkler then light it has they hold it away from their body.
  • Wear closed toed shoes.
  • Drop sparklers into a bucket of cold water as soon as you or your child are finished with it. Sparklers are still very hot after it stops burning.

I haven’t tried it yet but I am using the book “Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lesson’s” with my 3 year old and 4 year old  which we all love and this program is put together by the author of that book. It combines parent/child or teacher/child lessons with Computer activities.

You can download the beginners program, Funnix 1 as well as Funnix 2 which can be used as a followup from Funnix 1 or the 100 Easy Lesson’s book which goes from sound recognition to 2nd grade reading level. Funnix 2 takes children to a 3rd grade reading level.

This is also an effective program for children with various special needs.

If your child enjoys playing with play dough and clay they will love Glurch. It doesn’t keep a form but it can be cut, stretched and colored on with markers. Do not use with children under 3 as the Borax is not safe to ingest. Keep refrigerated as it can spoil quickly.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups white glue
  • 1 1/2 cups Water
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 3 teaspoons Borax

Directions:

  1. Pour 2 cups of white or clear (for a transparent effect) school glue in with 1 1/2 cups of water in a large bowl. Get the solution as smooth as you can.
  2. In a separate bowl mix 3 teaspoons of borax with 1/3 cup water. Stir for several seconds.
  3. Pour the Borax solution into the large bowl with the glue and water.
  4. Work with your hands until the solution is no longer liquidy. It should be smooth and rubbery.
  5. You may need to set aside the solid portion and add another Borax/water solution to the glurch that is still liquid.
  6. Store the Glurch in an airtight container.

For some babies sitting independently comes naturally, for others it takes a lot of practice. No matter which category your baby falls into, these exercises can help strengthen your baby’s back and neck muscles to encourage independent sitting.

  • Tummy time is the first step to helping your baby strengthen her neck muscles. By 4 months old she will probably be able to lift her head and chest up to look around. If she is unable to do this at 6 months old you may want to discuss this with your doctor.
  • Bumbo chairs and Boppy pillows help your baby learn to sit up by providing enough support that they can sit up without toppling over.
  • Hold his little hands while he sits on his bottom with his legs in v shape. This could be a good way to help an older sibling feel important by helping the baby learn to sit.
