Naturally Teaching Preschoolers Prepositions
Teaching young children prepositions (over, under, behind, beside) is an important step in teaching them to follow directions. Children as young as one year old can learn prepostions when you make learning fun and natural.
Start by playing with your child. If he is playing with toy cars then pick a car up and put it next to another object and mention where that car is – look the car is beside the block, behind the teddy bear, under the blanket etc…
Another great way to ‘naturally’ teach your little one prepositions is to use them often while giving your child directions and pointing behind, over, on and under objects as you say the word. Examples “sit on the chair”, “stand behind the line”.
Your child may amaze you at how quickly he can learn prepostions!
