Here is a fun rhyming game especially for those children.

If you don’t have an indoor area big enough for all participating children to run, this activity will need to be done outdoors.

  1. Mark a line with masking tape, chalk or any other suitable way.
  2. Mark a designated area several feet away for the children to stop at.
  3. Have the children stand along the line.
  4. Call out 2, 3 or more words at a time (depending on skill level of children). If all the words that you call out rhyme the children run, if they don’t the children stay still.

It is up to you whether or not you want this game to be competitive.

Remember to explain that for a word to rhyme the last sound has to sound the same.

Choose a variety of different objects around your house/classroom and walk around with your child/ren pointing out the objects you have chosen and encourage them to tell you what rhymes with that word. You could also have two rhyming objects close to each other to make it easier for young children such as a mat and a baseball bat or show them a chair and have the children point to their hair.

Another version of the game you can play is give your children pictures of objects and have them find rhyming objects around the house or classroom.

First of all have everyone sit in a circle or if it is just two people, sit across from eachother. Hold a ball and say a word then roll it to the next person. The person who recieves the ball needs to say a word that rhymes with your word. Let everyone take turns choosing the first word and the rhyming word.

Another variation is for each person who recieves the ball to say two words that rhyme with eachother.
