I haven’t tried it yet but I am using the book “Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lesson’s” with my 3 year old and 4 year old  which we all love and this program is put together by the author of that book. It combines parent/child or teacher/child lessons with Computer activities.

You can download the beginners program, Funnix 1 as well as Funnix 2 which can be used as a followup from Funnix 1 or the 100 Easy Lesson’s book which goes from sound recognition to 2nd grade reading level. Funnix 2 takes children to a 3rd grade reading level.

This is also an effective program for children with various special needs.

On Scriptures 4 Kids you can print off an Articles Of Faith memorization chart where the child can colour an ice cream for each one they memorize then after you are done you can take your child out for ice cream or throw an ice cream party.

I am taking a different approach to this with my four year old daughter who is doing very well with her reading lessons. When she can read (probably partly memorizing) the first four articles of faith and then I will take her out for ice cream. After the first four we will work on the next four.

This list is commonly referred to as the Dolch list. These words are the 220 most common words in books.

The words are grouped into different levels, not necessarily the corresponding grade. If you have a 3 year old or 4 year old that is ready to read go ahead and help her memorize the words and once the Pre-primer list is mastered go onto the Primer list and so on.  Memorizing this list as well as phonetic activities will help your child become a fluent reader.

Using pictures from magazines, colouring books, flier , drawn yourself or  printed off the internet have your child circle pictures that begin with a certain sound. Start with easy to identify sounds such as m, s, d and b.

You can also make cards with the pictures and cards with letters and have your child match the sound with the picture. Laminate the cards to help them last longer.
