Using pictures from magazines, colouring books, flier , drawn yourself or  printed off the internet have your child circle pictures that begin with a certain sound. Start with easy to identify sounds such as m, s, d and b.

You can also make cards with the pictures and cards with letters and have your child match the sound with the picture. Laminate the cards to help them last longer.

I found that she was determined to do the assignments but her way. The description would say draw a line from the uppercase B to the lowercase b. Instead she wanted to circle the b’s. Or she would print the a’s on the line she was supposed to and then she wanted to make rainbows over all the a’s she just printed. At least she is still learning the concepts the book intends for the children to learn.

I think this book is a great way to prepare her for kindergarten. Eventhough it is two years away, it is nice to know that Sylvan Learning Products can help her be at the top of her class. I hope to use more of Sylvan’s product to help prepare my children for school and to help them catch up or get ahead during the summer breaks.

Choose a variety of different objects around your house/classroom and walk around with your child/ren pointing out the objects you have chosen and encourage them to tell you what rhymes with that word. You could also have two rhyming objects close to each other to make it easier for young children such as a mat and a baseball bat or show them a chair and have the children point to their hair.

Another version of the game you can play is give your children pictures of objects and have them find rhyming objects around the house or classroom.

1. With a white crayon write messages on a hard boiled egg to your children. You can write their names, a loving message, something funny or a scripture.
2. Have the children dye their eggs using a natural dye (safe from toxins!)

• Beet Juice or Cranberry juice will make pink
• Grape Juice will make Lavender
• Orange peels, lemon peels or carrots will make Yellow
• Spinach or grass will make Green
• Blueberries will make Blue

To make your dye This is what you need to do.

1. I a pot add 4 cups of water and 3 tablespoons of vinegar.
2. Add your ingredients to make your colour. The more you use the brighter the color will be. Use 2-4 cups. 1 colour per pot. You can combine ingredients to make a different colour ie. Yellow + Green = Orange. Also a great learning experience for children!
3. Bring water and ingredients to a boil then simmer for at least 30 minutes.
4. Drain the dye into a container.
5. Add eggs to the  the dye, turning eggs over occasionally to allow for even colouring. Leave egg in dye depening on how deep you want the colour.
