Crayon Shapes

Make new crayons with broken pieces of crayons. You can get creative and mix colours! What you need are:

broken crayon pieces that are less than 1 inch in length
disposable cupcake tin – you can find these in fun shapes as well! Make sure the tin is able to go in the oven.
Non-stick cooking spray.

Directions:

Heat oven to 300° F
Remove paper from crayon pieces.
Spray tin with non-stick cooking spray.
Fill each tin shape half way with crayon pieces
Bake for about 6 minutes. The crayons should just be melted enough to hold its shape. Especially if you are using more than one colour you don’t want the crayons to melt thoroughly.
Allow to cool before you using the new crayons.

This is a great science activity for your child where you can discuss what heating and cooling do to wax as well as discuss colours for younger children. Larger crayons are also easier for toddlers to colour with.

Teaching Children 2 – 5 About The Water Cycle

Teach your toddlers and preschoolers about the water cycle by playing a puddle watch game.

On a rainy day, wait for the rain to stop then take your child outside to find a puddle on the side walk or driveway and draw or have your child draw a line a couple of inches around the puddle.

Take your child outside to look at the puddle several times throughout the day and talk about the puddle becoming smaller and the water cycle.

This activity will help your child learn communication skills, thinking skills, size (larger, smaller) as well as learning about the water cycle.

Baggie Garden Results

If you haven’t already made a baggie garden with your kids, what is stopping you? Chances are you already have all the materials and the beans grow so quickly that young children will remember participating in the activity as they watch their beans grow.

Here is a picture of one of my daughters baggie garden just one week after putting the garden together.

The girls just love to pull up their blinds each day and talk about their beans growing. I used navy beans but you can use any dried bean you have in your pantry.

Noodle Fish

Perform the following expieriment infront of your children, explaining what you are doing as you do it. Encourage them to guess what will happen!

Take a large clear mixing bowl or fish bowl.
Fill the bowl halfway with vinegar then add one drop of blue food coloring.
Then add several small pices of softened noodles.
Next add 1/4 cup of baking soda into the vinegar.
The noodles will wiggle like fish swimming.
